The Homosexual Holocaust

Another dark chapter has been begun in human history as Chechnya, a slightly autonomous region in Southern Russia, has begun rounding up homosexuals to put in concentration camps. The last time this happened was during the Holocaust from 1933 to 1945 where 5,000 to 15,000 homosexual men were interned in camps. So far 100 people have been detained and taken to modern day concentration camps such as in Argun and of them, 3 have died. The camps are usually disguised as military compounds but they are places of hell for those brought there.

Chechen forces and mercenaries have rounded them up in the dead of night with sting operations and searching through their phones. If found, they can be blackmailed for heavy fees if they wish to get out of going to the camps. Most, however, don’t get that luxury and are treated horribly. They can be imprisoned and hunted for sport by corrupt officials or face beatings, electrocution, emotional abuse, and sexual assault. The 3 that died faced relentless beatings which may be the future for other gay men throughout the region.

The regional leader, Ramzan Kadyrov, has denied the existence of the camps and existence of gay people in Chechnya. “If there were, they would essentially be exiled anyway,” he said in an interview. When at the camps, they are sat in a large room and only give two to three meters of space to move around in. They are only allowed to go to the bathroom 3 times a day and can be detained for days, weeks, or months. Their phones are kept on so that if any lovers or gay friends call them, they can be rounded up and brought to the camps as well. Several times a day, they are beaten as well but it is under the name “Questioning, Prevention, and Development.” The Chechens did this to find out the friends of the men so they could be rounded up as well. After sometime, family is called to collect the people but since it is a conservative Muslim dominated region, barely anyone comes to save these people from the hell they face.

Pictures have come out online to show the injuries that some have sustained while in the concentration camp. The entire world has responded by calling for action in Chechnya, calling it “a brutal campaign against LGBT people.” The US and UK have led the charge with protests and have even called for the Russian President, Vladimir Putin, to intervene and investigate what’s going on in the region under his control but he has denied it as well. Even President Trump and Secretary of State Rex Tillerson have yet to say anything publicly about the issue.

Currently, the Russian LGBT Network is raising money to evacuate the LGBT people in Chechnya before they are harmed and are looking for donations. The UN has also planned a meeting on human rights violations, led by the US delegate Nikki Haley who brought this to the forefront during a meeting in NYC. Hopefully, there can be a swift resolution to this danger before another Holocaust happens and takes away millions of innocent lives.
