Through out the 10 month season, games aren’t the only thing on these girls’ minds but also competitive cheer. It gives the team an opportunity to showcase skills and perform a 2:30 minute routine in front of a panel of judges. Within, that routine there are many different options to showcase them but this year as me being a JV cheerleader we start with opening which consist of 3-4 stunt groups performing a set of stunts. Then we move into jump sequence which usually consist of 4 or more jumps; ranging from toe touch to pike or even maybe right hurdler. Now comes the fun part CHEER, coaches provide a cheer to us, we add in motions, stunts, shoulder sits, etc.
After, cheer then comes pyramid which is fun to perform and fun to watch. Pyramid consist of everyone of the 17 girls on the team are connected somehow we find a way to use everyone. Finally, dance which is the last step to this routine sometimes it can be difficult to learn but I think it brings the routine together, not only are we serious when we hit to the mat but energetic. Competition season starts mid October we compete for 4 weekends straight, known as pre-states, then comes our big day STATES… the NCHSAA teams up with cheer ltd. (cheer limited) to put together an incredible day with over 200 teams. This is the number one day we look forward to every year. Which this year not only did JV take home a state championship win but also Varsity won a state championship title. After this competition we move into national mode. Every year mid March we travel to Myrtle Beach, SC to compete with teams from all over the nation.
Nationals run up to $450 for one cheerleader that only covers registration
fees, then you still have food, hotel, and bus fuel. As one of the fundraisers we had a little girl cheer camp where K-6 graders could come to a camp held in our aux gym from 9am-12pm. We taught them a dance, cheers, and even stunts. Then the following week they cheered with us for the girls’ basketball game then at halftime they performed their dance. Another fundraiser available till February 20th is a sports apparel store where you can buy EG clothing which all proceeds go to our go fund me to help us with national fees.
After this competition cheer sadly comes to an end but sometime in April we have a cheer banquet to celebrate our win and to share memories of the long season. Then tryouts are mid May then the season begins again in June.
