Protect yourself against the Flu

The flu is a common word we hear this time of year, but this year it has a very scary connotation. In America the flu has officially reached epidemic status. Every state in the continental US has reported widespread flu cases with California being one of the worst hit states. With the flu killing mostly children and the elderly, over 50 children have been killed by the disease and that number is expected to grow. Even hospitals and urgent cares are running out of rooms and supplies due to the high volume of flu patients.

Ambulances are arriving to emergency departments and are having to wait to drop off their patients. Businesses are even feeling the stress of the season. Some businesses are putting out signs telling patrons “If you have the flu or flu symptoms, please do not enter”. Places of employment are also beginning to provide free flu shots to their employees to prevent workplace absences.

There is even some controversy over the flu shots effectiveness, leading people to wonder if it’s even worth getting the injection. Another controversial issue surrounding the flu involves the popular flu treatment called Tamiflu.

People, especially parents, are getting concerned over the very rare occurrences of there being severe side effects to the drug. The CDC says that the best way to prevent the flu is to get the flu injection. “Getting an annual flu vaccine is the first and best way to protect yourself and your family from the flu. Flu vaccination can reduce flu illnesses, doctors’ visits, and missed work and school due to flu” (CDC Website).

This year the CDC also says that the flu injection gives protection against three strains of influenza. The nasal spray vaccine is also an option, however, the nasal spray is not CDC approved.
