Cheerleaders not treated fair
For the second year in a row, the Eastern Guilford cheer program won a state championship but many cheerleaders feel they way they have been treated is unfair. Did you know that our cheerleaders put so much hard work and dedication into their sport that they spend more time with the team than they do their own family?
We interviewed a varsity cheerleader and asked her how she feels about winning state who responded:
“I feel that winning states is big for me because so many people don’t believe in the cheer team. What people don’t know is that cheer is hard, JV had to change their routine because someone got hurt two days before states. We have to cheer for football, basketball and still have time to learn a routine.”
From a cheerleaders perspective:
"No matter how many times we win states, the school would never pay for the rings. If the football team or basketball team was to win then the school would pay for them. We just don’t think it's fair because we work just as hard as any other team but since cheer is “not a sport” If cheer is not a sport then why are we paying this athletic fee? They don't want to pay for the rings unless we win the cup. What they fail to see is that the cup is from all varsity teams that win first place and whatever first place team has the highest score but that’s not fair because they score everything different.
"If the football team would to win their division in states, they would get a ring but they not the only team to win states its more than one division that wins in football too. At the end of the day we are still a team and we think we should get treated the same as other teams do."
We also interviewed some other sport players and asked them if they think cheer is a sport, if they think it’s fair that cheerleaders don’t get treated the same as other teams, and if they think the school should pay for cheer rings.
Collin Smith: I don’t think cheer is a sport unless they compete. Cheerleaders don’t get treated fair. They help the football team when they down. I feel that the school should pay for their rings because they put in hard work to win.
So, our question to you is...How do you feel about the way our cheerleaders get treated?
