Students react to incident at Smith high school
On Monday December 3rd, an armed man came to Smith High School threatening to start shooting in the cafeteria. His name was Steve Brantley Spence. The police say in warrants that Spence came to Greensboro from Virginia with a “kill list” including two adults that he was expecting to find at Smith. He had just gotten charged with something in Virginia.
Spence came to Smith high school with two handguns, a long gun, 8 boxes of ammunition, magazines and also his “kill list”. He is currently in Guilford County jail with bail set at $1 million. Jordan, Lashonti Hines, an assistant principal, and D.K. Evans, the school resource officer, helped thwart Spence that day. At the end of the day no one was harmed and the school continued their school day.
I went around and asked a couple people what they thought on the situation.
How would you feel if something like this happened at Eastern?
Timiyah from Eastern: I wouldn’t know how to feel to know that my teachers and classmates were in trouble but I probably would want to know no one was hurt and everything was okay in the end.
Since this did happen at your school, how do you feel on the situation?
Stavonte’ from Smith: It was crazy around the school especially not knowing what’s going on then to hear your teachers are in danger. It was just a lot going on.
As a parent how do you feel about what happened at Smith?
Christine (my mother): As a parent I am glad the staff handled the situation how they did and I would be happy knowing my child and everyone else were unharmed. There was a lot going on that day, I’m happy that no one was harmed and everything was okay. Everything has been really crazy this year. Some things we just can’t control, some people we can’t control. I want everyone to stay safe and of course have a merry Christmas.
