Work vs Homework

Students, I have a question: “Should we be responsible to do homework if we work late or we are doing an after-school activity?”

When conducting my study, or poll as some people would call it, I concluded that many of us agree that we shouldn’t be responsible for any type of homework when we are working after school to help pay for our things or participating in after-school activities such as being an athlete. Being a working high school student, it is, at times, hard for me to concentrate on my homework when I come home from working a long shift right after school. Most of my peers are athletes and work at the same time. Those two things alone are tough to juggle as a high school student. While conducting this activity I interviewed some students and teachers. First, I am going to talk about myself. I work at Texas Roadhouse and I must say that job is difficult having to satisfy every customer.

A question I asked a student-athlete was: Do you feel like you have time to do homework when you come home late from a game or practice?

Omarion J: “No, because I get home after 10 o’clock at times, I then need to get myself ready for bed, the next day, and more.”

Then, I asked someone who worked like me and their response was,

Isaiah O: “No, because I work four days out of the weekday and I don’t get off until 11 o’clock.”

Finally, I asked two teachers and their responses were similar.

Mrs. Absher: “It depends on the situation. If they are working to support their family, then I will excuse it. If I see that they are successful, then I will modify their assignments to how they work if they show that they are doing good on their test.

Mr. Jones: “I don’t want to be taken advantage of because I work with kids. It would be a case by case basis for me to excuse it but also, education should come before work anyways.
